What is the threat?

Whilst there are many benefits to be gained by connecting to the Internet there are risks which must be assessed and addressed. Internet security issues range from curious prowlers to well-organised, technically highly adept intruders that could gain access to your company's private information or indeed bring down your entire company's IT systems. Each year the threat becomes larger, but by analyzing and defending against threats at your point of connection to the Internet you can take advantage of most Internet services, whilst limiting your risk of intrusions.

What is a Firewall:

A Firewall is a device that sits between your network and the Internet and only permits authorised traffic to pass through it.

Firewalls can be likened to a door - allowing in what you want and keeping out what you do not, but like any house door it can never be considered as a universal remedy. Firewalls are your front line of defence in the security battle and they must be backed up by multi layers of defence and a sound security policy should be implemented.
